About

Why A Green Thread?

A Green Thread is an idea that’s been rolling around in my mind for a while. It was initially born of a desire to share my love of nature and creativity. Recently, it’s grown into what feels like a necessary space; one where a need to protect our planet converges with creative endeavors.

Capitalism, consumption, and supremacy culture have gotten us to this point. The Earth is being harmed at an alarming rate, and is responding in kind in an effort to protect herself. The most vulnerable people and creatures on this planet are being harmed already, and we know that this will only get worse if we don't take drastic action. The actions, events, and decisions that got us to where we are can't be changed. What we choose to do going forward is still up to us.

While the problem at hand is bigger than any one of us, we can create significant change though changing our own behaviors. By reducing our consumption, we not only reduce the waste we produce, but we also reduce the hold capitalism has on us, and can truly vote with our dollars.

Who am I

I’m Karen, and I’ll be your guide on this adventure. I’m a Physicist by education, an engineer by day, and a maker. I am on a mission to change my relationship to this capitalist hellhole we live in, while pushing to protect our planet and work toward collective liberation for everyone. I do tend to swear - a lot (full disclosure if that’s not for you).

At the end of the day, I’m another human like you, stumbling through and existing in this society that was designed to extract every resource from the world it possibly can - including our very lives. I’m looking for answers, and in the process doing my best to do as little harm as possible.

What this space is

I strive to make this as inclusive of a space as I can. That being said, I will not risk the safety of anyone in the name of inclusiveness. There will be absolutely no toleration for hatred or bigotry of any from in this space. I will use my ban hammer without remorse nor hesitation should it become necessary.

I recognize that by nature who I am and what I look like makes me unsafe for some people. I commit to being open to being accountable and growing as necessary, and I expect my readers (aka you) to do the same.

What you'll find here

On A Green Thread, I will be sharing experiments in improving the impact I have on this planet. From repair, mending, upcycling, recycling, and more, you'll see my efforts to bring new life to beloved garments, repair broken items, or find some way to use things that are no longer working.
